Birthday cakes

More cake photos (all decorations are made from fondant)

This first one is groucho marks juggling, they were having their party at some place where they teach you juggling and other circus tricks.

This is eloise from books such as eloise at the plaza

I loved this cake i thought it was such a cute idea having a box of crayons on the cake, then it had rainbow sprinkles on the sides

This was kind of a strange cake but i liked it, it was for a man who was turning 40. He's a big fan of the song I'm still here, so he wanted that written on the cake. I suppose its fitting for a 40th bday as well.

And last but certainly not least my favorite cake ever, monty python and the holy grail. I wish more people would order cool cakes like this one.

Cakes Cakes Cakes

So again sorry for  not posting more often, just been busy busy busy. So today i figured I'd just post some pics of cakes I've done at work.

This was a cake i did that was designed after a display wedding cake that Jess made. The little girl liked that cake and wanted a similar version done on a small cake. All the decorations are made from fondant. I'm really glad the people went with chocolate frosting, i think it works really well with the design.

I absolutely loved this cake, if you don't know who that is it's general grievous from star wars episode III revenge of the sith. I'm not actually a huge fan of general grievous but it was a nice change from the typical star wars characters people want. (all deco are fondant)

The client brought in a napkin that they were using for their party, and they had coordinated all their decor with, and wanted a cake to match as well. It was a really lovely design, and i loved the colors. All decorations are made from fondant.

Here's a cake for a pretty cool 3 year old, not only does his birthday cake have a guitar on it, but it's cookies and cream! yummmm (all deco are fondant)

Well that's all for today, i have lots more pictures stored up, but I'm trying to ration them so i can have more posts. So hopefully i will be posting soon, as well as having some pretty exciting news, fingers crossed.

cakes

I know it's been a really long time, life's just been a bit stressful lately. It's also just been way to hot to do any baking in my little apartment. So i figured i'd post a couple pictures of some cakes i've done at work.

This is a buzzlightyear decoration i made for a cake (all fondant)

Hello Kitty cake (fondant)

Noah's Ark cake, for a christening

I'll try to post some more pictures, and hopefully there might be a day cool enough for me to do some baking.

Sugar Flowers part 2

These sugar flowers are ones that i made for a tinkerbell baby shower cake. They are all made from gumpaste (sugar paste), which is an edible sugar dough. These were just a fantasy flower i made up. I wanted them to look mystical, girly, and tropically (since neverland seemed kind of tropically).

This first flower was for the very top of the cake, where tinkerbell would be sitting on it. I used rolled the gumpaste as thin as possible then used a 3 petal cutter. I believe it was meant for tulips of daffodils, but not quite sure. Then pressed each petal into a petal veiner, then using a ball tool thinned out the edges, and gave them they're curl. These were then left to dry for a day on top of foam egg crate to give them they're shape.

After they were dry, it was time for some petal dust. I used a combination of pinks, reds, and some purple. Also a shimmer pink, which gave them they're sparkle. Then i placed one 3 petal piece atop of another, they were attached using gumpaste glue (water with gumpaste disintegrated into it).

Next is a photo of the center for the flowers that would be going on the tiers of the cake. This was achieved by taking gumpaste that was colored yellow, then rolling it into a ball. Then tapering one end a tiny bit. Then take a floral wire, and bend the one end so it has a small hook. Dip the hook end into the gumpaste glue then press the wire into the base of the center.

Then i used small needle nose pliers (you could also use tweezers, but make sure they are just for cake use lol) Then i pinch the gumpaste all over to give it that bumpy effect. Hang these upside down to dry for 1 day.

When these were dry i again dusted them with a combination of petal dusts. For this i used greens, yellow, and a coppery brown.

Here is a close-up of the center after it has been attached to the flower

These are 2 photos of the completed flowers

Now these flowers were done a bit differently than the flower used for the top of the cake. These flowers are made with individual petals. This is done using a celboard and wire.
Step1: Roll your gumpaste onto the celboard and get it as thin as possible.
Step2: Cut out the shape of your petals (i just freehanded them using an exacto knife
Step3: Insert a wire into each petal, into the center of the thinker part (which is what the celboard is for)

Then i pressed each petal into the petal veiner, and used the ball tool to thin and curl the edges. Then each petal is left on the egg foam to dry for 1 day.

These are then assembled by holding the center, the bend the wire in the petals to a 90 degree angle. The one by one add each petal by using floral tape to tape the petal wire to the center wire. Make sure the wires are completely covered with the floral tape.

After they are assembled, It's time for more dusting, again i used reds, pinks, and a small amount of purple. Along with a shimmering pink

Last picture, of all the flowers together
Stay posted soon i will post the cake in its entirety :D

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!!

These are some photos of a spongebob cake i did for a little boys birthday.

These First 2 photos are of the cake tiers after i iced them and airbrushed them.
The cake was chocolate cake with vanilla simple syrup (this helps keep your cakes moist, it's just equal parts sugar and water, heat until sugar is dissolved, then let cool. Then you can add whatever flavor you wish. Liquors are the preferred flavorent but since this was for little ones i just stuck to vanilla extract. Add the flavor to taste.) Then it was covered with vanilla buttercream.

The water/coral effect was done by first icing the cake with a thin layer of buttercream that had been colored to a light blue. Then refrigerated, after it is cold and the buttercream has firmed take a icing spatula and dab the buttercream along the sides. It's sort of hard to explain, but the best way i can describe it is you smack globs of icing around the cake. Keep smacking it with the spatula to pull the icing out.

Then return the cake to the fridge until icing is firm, then its time for airbrushing. Well since i'm on a budget i can't afford an airbrushing machine. However wilton has solved this problem for the at home pastry chef. Its called wilton Color Mist. So i used Green, Yellow, Blue, and purple to achieve the look seen below.

Then we have some the characters, first is Gary the snail, Then we have Patrick Star, and last but not least Spongebob (before he his arms and hat were attached) himself. The Characters are all edible. They are made from rice krispies, fondant, and a little gumpaste.

Next is the pineapple house, this is also made from primarily rice krispies, covered in fondant. The leaves are made from gumpaste. I used silver dust to make the windows and door look metallic.

Here is the cake after stacking adding borders, and some fondant jellyfish and seaweed.

Finally here is the finished product after it safely arrived to its final destination

Thats it for today, sorry for the delays :]
